Hello. When you upload your Word file, there is a note saying "Note that variables must be placed in the body of the document, not in text boxes, charts, etc. You can, however, use background elements such as images, shapes, etc. in the document behind the text."

So just type your %variables% in the document directly and use centering, text alignment, space characters, etc. to align them as needed. The reason for this is that many Word parsers see text boxes as images - they don't recognize the text box content as text, and this makes it impossible to replace the text with the variable value.
